From the mind of Dave Morris, the writer behind inkle’s highly rated iOS interactive publication Frankenstein, comes a new Mary Shelley inspired work — the Frankenstein Wars. Currently on the final stretch in Kickstarter, the Frankenstein Wars is an interactive gamebook about war, dominance and an “unstoppable army of the dead.”
The premise of the game is that two brothers have access to the secrets of Viktor Frankenstein — including the horrible secret of his great monster. You control the gamebook through a series of interactive maps, as well as deciding the non-linear, branching storylines between the two brothers and you can decide whether they’re going to be allies or enemies.
If you’re a fan of a more modern gamebook style (something akin to 80 Days or another offering from Cubus, Necklace of Skulls) than the promise from Frankenstein Wars is more of the same, with a grittier take than those other titles.
The game purports to be an “interactive blockbuster,” which implies a certain amount of cinematic intention. With this promise comes the idea of weather systems that effect the course of the game, strategic battles that you have narrative control over, as well as time-sensitive decisions.
Cubus has had 4 gamebooks prior to the Frankenstein Wars, including one previously reviewed on Storycade (the Necklace of Skulls).
As a backer, you can receive the gamebook at the $4 tier (it’s in Euro’s, as Cubus games is located in Barcelona), and they have about a week left to reach their funding goal.
